Carnival in São Paulo begins with parades of revelers’ associations

Street performances by carnival blocos—revelers’ associations—in São Paulo kick off this Friday (Feb. 2) in the neighborhoods of Mooca in the east side and Butantã in the west side of the city. The festivities will span eight days, featuring 637 parades by 579 blocos: on February 3 and 4 (pre-carnival); February 10, 11, 12, and 13 (carnival); and February 17 and 18 (post-carnival). Local authorities anticipate the participation of 15 million people in the city’s street carnival.

On Saturday (3), there are 123 parades scheduled across the city’s various regions.

São Paulo’s municipal administration emphasizes that all street carnival activities must be free of charge and “festive and non-competitive in nature,” without charging revelers for exclusive areas or any other fees.
